Breath Analysis Operator Course

Program Overview
The Breath Analysis Operator Course trains police officers in the operation of evidential breath test instruments. The program presents information on the effects of alcohol on the human body, operational procedures, Vehicle and Traffic Law pertaining to DWI enforcement, and pertinent case law. Successful students will receive a Breath Analysis Operator Permit which will expire two years from the date of issuance.

Breath Analysis Operator Recertification Course

Program Overview

Pursuant to Department of Health regulations, all Breath Analysis Operators must be recertified every two years. To be eligible for recertification, currently certified operators must successfully complete a written examination at an authorized testing center prior to the expiration of their current permit. This course contains a distance learning component consisting of a comprehensive review that all students must complete before being admitted into the written examination. Successful students will receive a Breath Analysis Operator Permit from the Department of Health which will be valid for up to two years from the date indicated on the permit. Expiration dates are not based on the date completion of a recertification course or distance learning component.

As an alternative to the four-hour classroom program, DCJS offers an on-line recertification program that is self-paced and may be completed over one or more sessions. Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Course

Program Overview
This course focuses on the enforcement of regulations that affect commercial motor vehicles. Students receive a broad base of instruction concerning registration, operator licensing and safety requirements, and the use of commercial vehicles in terrorist incidents. Completion will allow trainees to confidently enforce Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations as well as NYS Vehicle and Traffic and Transportation Laws. Trainees will also learn about hidden compartments and signs that the operator of a commercial vehicle may be intending to use the vehicle for a terrorist act. The program includes classroom and practical field exercises.

Commercial Vehicle Weight Enforcement Course

This course presents the basic information necessary for officers involved in traffic safety enforcement to deal successfully with regulations concerning the legal weight and dimensions of Commercial motor vehicles. The program includes both classroom and practical field exercises.

Drugs That Impair Driving Course

Program Overview
This NHTSA course is designed to give police officers the ability to recognize drivers under the influence of drugs other than alcohol and to take appropriate action when they encounter same. The course provides additional information on the use of standardized Field sobriety Tests and the ways in which they are affected by different drugs. This course WILL NOT qualify a student as a Drug Recognition expert (DRE).

DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Course

Program Overview
This National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) program is designed to enhance the police officer’s ability to detect the alcohol or drug impaired motor vehicle operator. The course instructs the officer in ways of building a strong common law case emphasizing the administration of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFST) developed by NHTSA.

DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Instructor Course

Program Overview
This NHTSA program is designed to prepare an MPTC certified Instructor to instruct the DWI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing course. This includes classroom presentation and workshops.

Emergency Vehicle Operator's Instructor Course

Basic Course for Police Officers, its equivalent, the Campus Public Safety Officer Course or the emergency driver training unit of either basic course and a valid MPTC General Topics Instructor certificate.
Program Overview

Instruction, demonstration and practical application cover the elements of basic driving skills; including defensive driving, skids and their causes, and care of police vehicles. During the driving range practicum, students are expected to demonstrate basic driving skills and techniques while performing prescribed exercises.

Essentially, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved course of training for police emergency operations instructor training.

Graduates can teach EVOC to new police recruits in an approved MPTC Basic Course for Police Officers, its equivalent, Pre-employment Police Basic Training Program, or Campus Public Safety Officer Course.

Motor Vehicle Collision Investigation: At Scene Course

Program Overview
The ASI program trains police officers to process a traffic accident scene by preserving and collecting the available data and physical evidence. Students also learn how to perform basic speed calculations and produce scale diagrams of accident scenes.

Motor Vehicle Collision Investigation: Advanced Course

Successful completion of the Accident Scene Investigation Course with a passing grade of at least 80%
Program Overview
This course enables accident investigators to become proficient in the examination and interpretation of crash data. The course includes lecture and project work dealing with thrust diagrams, collision analysis, impact and airborne speed determinations, and time position diagrams.
